Christina kimeze
Retail price: £38, special exhibition price until 11 May 2025: £30
This new catalogue accompanies the exhibition Between Wood and Wheel presented at the South London Gallery from 31 January - 11 May 2025. It showcases a new body of work by London-based artist, Christina Kimeze, alongside documentation of earlier works to give a unique insight into the artist's practice in recent years.
The beautifully designed, fully illustrated hard-backed publication includes newly commissioned essays by writer, curator and broadcaster Ekow Eshun, and Eleanor Nairne, the Keith L. and Katherine Sachs Curator and Head of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, alongside a conversation between the artist and Alayo Akinkugbe, writer, curator, and creator of the Instagram platform A Black History of Art.
The texts delve into the central themes of Kimeze's work over the past five years, exploring her use of materials and the impact of Black feminist writers and other influences on her practice. Themes of interiority, relationship with the inner-self, nostalgia, and memories of the artist's father's homeland of Uganda also emerge.
For the cover of her first monographic book, Kimeze has created a specially designed three-color screenprint on linen.
