From Where We Land - Ufuoma Essi, 2021

This SLG Publication documents the research behind South London Gallery’s Postgraudate Artist in Residency 20/21 Ufuoma Essi’s film of the same name.

xxxx

Essi's experimental film examines second-generation Black British women and their relationship with identity, feelings of cultural displacement, and their shared histories. Informed by contributions of the 1980s Black feminist movement in England and the legacies of first-generation children of African and Caribbean immigrants, the film incorporates archive, VHS and 16mm footage.
The publication includes full-colour stills and photography showcasing elements of the film and installation of the exhibition as well as excerpts of the script. Texts by curators, researchers and writers, Rabz Lansiquot and Tendai Mutambu, explore Ufuoma’s work in the context of moving image practices and the social and historical context of the film.
