LOVE IS THE RESISTANCE is a new limited edition print made exclusively for the SLG by David Austen. It harnesses the need to cling to love and each other, not least at a moment of extreme tension and violence in the world.

London-based David Austen’s stylistically diverse practice spans painting, sculpture, printmaking and film. He draws on words and images in his work to imply the existence of a bigger, ungraspable story, capturing fleeting feelings or observations. He draws on art historical influences as well as film noir, Greek mythology and absurdist theatre to create diverse works bound together by his very personal take on love, yearning, loss and grief, memory and dream. On the subject of his limited edition print for the SLG he says:

“I collect words in notebooks. I make little collages of pasted and sellotaped text that I then blow up, amplifying the imperfections. I originally made a version of this work as a present to a friend as a shared memory. I like the idea of gift and exchange in life and art.

I have seen the words love and resistance in different juxtapositions on placards at many demonstrations and protests we have witnessed over the last few years. I have always loved the dream-like slogan ‘Under the paving stones, the beach’ from the 1968 Paris student protests. ‘Love is the Resistance’ also makes me think of the film Army of Shadows directed by Jean-Pierre Melville, and the more recent Christian Petzold film, Transit.

LOVE IS THE RESISTANCE is a response to bad times.”
