Layered as the background is a photograph taken by Chiizii of a fresh produce stand in the area of London that she lives in. The stand sells plantain and melons which are not native to the United Kingdom but are grown in Nigeria. For Chiizii, this speaks to the efforts and needs of the diaspora to consume their cultural foods. Layered over this is an image she shot of her aunt’s former home in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria - the home that holds many core experiences and memories with Igbo and Nigerian food for the artist.

These two images have been combined to look as if they are one, seamlessly blended. The collage explores the experience of engaging with Igbo food culture in settings outside of Igboland.

Chiizii is an interdisciplinary artist, designer and researcher, born in London, raised in New York and Igbo. She works within many mediums, including painting, collage and textile design. Her work centers the specificities of Igbo, Nigerian and African experiences and histories. Recent shows include RA Summer Exhibition, Royal Academy 2021, Collective Processes Gucci Circolo 2021, Blacklisted: An Indefinite
Revolution, Christies 2020, and Peckham, Lagos, Repeat, South London Gallery, 2023.

All proceeds from your purchase directly support the South London Gallery's programmes, keeping the gallery spaces accessible to all.
